  • Steve was given more visiting time with his daughter due to his hard work in groups and therapy at COTS!  Both are very happy.
  • Dale moved into his own senior apartment in Cloverdale thanks to the help of COTS, Rent Right and section 8 voucher.
  • Former COTS Adult shelter member called to let us know he has passed all his SRJC courses with all A’s & B’s.
  • After being homeless 6 years without income, Joe was awarded SSI in our first SOAR disability claim.
  • Watching 13 month old twin brothers Darren and Kyle dance, clap and smile during our morning playgroup.
  • Hearing Louis say about his 22 month old daughter Alice, “She is the best thing that ever happened to me.”
  • The long awaited start of CNA classes came this week for a “can do” Mom! First, secure housing, now targeted education – next, the world!
  • A woman who is moving out of Vida Nueva is giving unneeded furniture and many household items to her neighbors.
  • Mothers in shared housing used the safe forum and language of a life skills training to apologize to each other for recent misunderstandings
  • Mary has secured a job she loves, received her Section 8 housing voucher, and completed her COTS workshop requirements – all in 6 months!

  • Zac got a second job and opened his first savings account ever!
  • After “calling” Elmo on the phone Alice (21 mo) was given an Elmo donated by our community; she’s been spotted pushing him in a stroller.
  • After recovering from brain surgery for a benign tumor, Jill was notified she was selected for Burbank housing this week.
  • Kathy, from The Family Center, quit smoking 4 days ago…congratulations to her!
  • Kathy’s son, Tommy from The Family Center, got an interview at Hanna Boy’s Center…very proud mom!
  • Tony and Ron ages 43 and 44 decide to sign up and take GED Preparation at the SRJC course in hopes of earning their GED
  • Our new Kitchen is taking shape. Coolers, convection ovens, steamer, dishwasher & shelving all in place. Coming soon Meals cooked at COTS!
  • 2 COTS families will be moving into a brand new permanent, supportive housing later this week!
  • Thanks to the Active 20/30 Club & Rohnert Park Bible Church, dozens of our families enjoyed a beautiful Easter packed with fun activities
  • Our new Shared Housing Match Coordinator just helped facilitate her first match. The housing partners move in together on Saturday!
  • Joe, for the first time in his life, feels like he is a productive part of the community & his family.
  • Dave completes over 100 hours of community service in less than 2 months of being at COTS.
  • Tommy, age 16, from The Family Center, has secured an interview with Hannah Boy’s Center…way to go, Tommy!
  • Congratulations to Sally, Mary, Sara and Kathy, all moms from The Family Center, for graduating from Rent Right!
  • While families colored eggs together they were trying to see who could come up with the most ‘egg-cellent’ egg joke; it was ‘eggs-austing’!
  • Mary said, “Thank you COTS! It is amazing how things CAN improve when we are all pulling for each other’s success.”
  • Two single women in Transitional Housing found permanent housing and look forward to moving.
  • An enterprising young student gathered donations of hundreds of books to enhance the libraries of our shared family homes and COTS shelter!
  • At the Kitchen, we quickly go from feast to famine & back.  Today, free range chicken from Petaluma Poultry filled our freezer.
  • Alice (21 mos.) gave baby Dylan (7 mos.)a big, long hug when he was crying during playgroup. What a heart!
  • A single mom enrolled her 4 year old daughter in preschool for the first time this week. Her daughter loves it!
  • Families had a blast at a Springtime Egg Hunt hosted by Casa Grande High’s Honor Society.  They hid over 300 eggs with sweets and prizes!
  • JP starts school to become a medical assistant on May 1 with a full scholarship to cover ALL his expenses and housing.
  • Mary got a job! This is her first job in over 5 years.
  • Our Family Connection volunteer teams are working with Jackie & her 2 teens and Teri and her 2 children; they look forward to outings every week.
  • Our wonderful nurse, Pat, volunteers her time with our families at Mary Isaak Center every Sunday morning…she is such a gift!
  • Jess has gone 5 days without drinking any soda! Her goal is to eat more veggies and cook at home 7 days a week.
  • One of our residents came forward to admit struggling with her recovery.  She is reaching out for help and wants me to hold her accountable
  • Dan beamed as he loaded his last box into his car and left to move into transitional housing with a new job and savings account.
  • Petaluma Kitchen satisfactorily passed inspection by Redwood Empire Food Bank-Kitchen is small very clean with clean well-organized storage.
  • Thanks to the Active 20/30 Club, the kids at the FC have a renovated play yard. The biggest hit? The painted road used for tricycle riding.
  • We moved 4 new residents into Transitional Housing this week and celebrated their successes last night at the monthly potluck dinner meeting!
  • After saving nearly two thousand dollars in just over a year, Dan is ready to accept the offer of permanent housing he received today!
  • Tutor Cindy came to help young mother Sarah study to take the GRE; they had a great first meeting discussing square roots.
  • Felito & Anna Utuie of AfricaOnFire in Mozambique visited the Kitchen Knitters to thank them for their gifts of knitted hats and scarves.
  • Folks with high blood pressure & diabetes will find healthy choices at the Petaluma Kitchen; undressed salad, raw veggies & hard boiled eggs.
  • Our tutor for the Children’s Program brought a special craft project for the kids to do. They loved it!
  • Dale got his section 8 voucher to move into a senior housing in Healdsburg
  • Tom and Kirstein got job offers and start training this week
  • Tim’s hard work lands him a new job that comes with housing.
  • 4 adult singles at COTS complete over 100 hours each of community service in less than 4 months
  • Adam completed an intense 3wk training earning 5 different work certifications, including Forklift Operator, Fire Safety & Work Zone Safety
  • Gail moves back home to Florida be with supportive family to raise her unborn child
  • After a workshop on Non-violent Communication, Rob shared that he was promoted due to his new problem solving skills with co-workers!
  • Linda and her four children are very grateful to have a home they call COTS.
  • Kathie spent 3 hours writing a letter to her son who is in jail. She said it’s the hardest thing she has ever done.
  • Shelly, a mom from The Family Center, opened a new savings account and deposited $1,000!
  • Katrina was our resident speaker for Sara’s Sonoma State Interns who visited The Family Center last week…she was wonderful!
  • COTS alum Ed wrote “School is going well – I now have over a year clean. I am painting a lot and am entering a competition in July. Thank you!”`
  • 7 year-old Gia reads board books to a very engaged Dylan (7 mos); he was bouncing and cooing for joy!
  • Six single adults in Transitional Housing graduated into independent housing this week.
  • We are now partnering with Neighbors Organized Against Hunger (NOAH) to provide supplemental food for families rebuilding their lives
  • Parents in our shared houses enthusiastically tackled outdoor chores (like gardening) with their kids in the beautiful sunshine.
  • Self care meets giving back! Most of the residents in one family shared house, participated in painting Easter ceramics to give as gifts to shelter kids!
  • New to COTS, Sarah (6) had no trouble making friends. During reading hour, she joined others in a make-shift fort to peruse a fun book.
  • On Sunday 1st Pres Church concert with amazing local talent Apologies to Beethoven raised $800 & 2 barrels of food for the Petaluma Kitchen.
  • Appreciation for COTS’ team support with my advocacy for a COTS member to extend his exit date so I would be able to accompany him to a medical appointment that is critical to his pending SSI application.
  • Veteran transitional housing member Jack is thrilled to be moving to our veteran’s permanent housing on Saturday.
  • Patience pays off in housing searches as three of our families just received Section 8 vouchers after 5 years on the waiting list!
  • Laughter is good therapy…our family night staff has a wonderful sense of humor and it permeates throughout our Family Center.
  • Joyce, a mom at The Mary Isaak Center, went to see her mom whom she hadn’t seen in 7 years…it was wonderful!
  • From Alice: “Today I accept the loss that brought me here – changed into a sense of mission to recover wholeness and work ahead to succeed.”
  • Maria received her letter from Section 8 letting her know that she can start looking for permanent housing!
  • Burdened by cleaning toilets, Susanna discovered her own desires for a better life and is signing up for school!
  • Gia (7) showed off her autographed program from the Actor’s Theater for Children’s Alice in Wonderland; the evil Red Queen was her favorite.
  • Alice (20 mos.) got a surprise during Reading Hour; volunteer Sophie brought in a special Elmo book.  Together they read it 5 times in a row!
  • Kitchen patron Jon apologized for his past bad behavior.  “Now that I have my brain back, I see that I was wrong and I’m sorry”
  • COTS organized a Community dinner for Vida Nueva from beginning to end.  All were served well and everything was picked up and put away.
  • Two of our children @ Mary Isaak Center received their new baseball uniforms and were all smiles!
  • 4 year old Anna learned to “jump in” when skipping rope this afternoon.  She squealed with excitement when she told her brothers.
  • Brothers Justin (9) and Jack (7) love when new volunteer Mel comes to play; her soccer skills give the boys a great outlet for their energy.
  • This week at COTS,  Louise celebrates being drug free for 90 days and  a new job!
  • Our new case manager is a natural at creating deep connections with her homeless mothers, laying a foundation for strong outcomes later.
  • Joe and Lee just called to say they are giving 2 weeks notice; they are buying a home of their own.
  • After 9 months on the job, Bill graduated from TH into a home of his own and says he owes his success to COTS believing in  him.
  • “Julie” successfully exercised her newly found skills in setting healthy boundaries in service to her own self care needs!  Bravo!
  • At Family Build Night the children are beginning to work together on projects and are speaking up about their life experiences while they are creating. Our fabulous volunteers run Build Night twice a month!
  • Mr. H graduated from the Transitional Shared Housing program. He now has a job, a college education, and plans to purchase his first home!
  • After a week’s separation, Family Center residents Anita (4) and Ginny (6) laughed with glee upon their reunification.
  • One of our single adults, Wilemena, recently got her old job back. With increased pay!
  • Cold mornings encouraged our cook, Nikki, to prepare breakfasts for the Kitchen.  Hot oatmeal, casseroles, scrambled eggs, and warm bellies!
  • Three moms and three strollers, were seen “strolling” down the street!
  • A resident got a promotion @ The Petaluma Kitchen.
  • A dad deposited over $1000 into their savings from an IRS refund check.
  • All Vida Nueva families are receiving custom disaster preparedness kits, which could provide life-saving assistance in an extreme emergency.
  • A mother and her two kids were given the support they  needed this week around bringing joy into their lives post the years of trauma.
  • Walking, I passed a familiar looking man. He stopped and thanked me(COTS) for helping him and his son 9 years ago. His son is now in college!
  • A single mom faced her fears and attended the doctor’s appointment she’s been putting off for months.  Hooray for self-care!
  • Families got together for a rousing game of “Smarter Than a 5th Grader. Ironically, the only one smarter was the youngest, a 6th grader!
  • COTS receives praises from Latino Service Providers of Sonoma County Org at last weeks meeting for the work it does for families & singles
  • Jay A finds stable job & is able to buy his children birthday presents for the first time in over 2 years. He finally feels like a dad again
  • With the help of Job Smart and the work Right Coordinator, Jean started her dream job at Goodwill this week!
  • Family Center mom went on picnic with new Family Connection team and loved it!
  • A teenage boy decided to come back to the Family Center instead of staying out on the street, mom was very relieved.
  • One of our FC moms graduated from drug dependency court last week; CPS worker told her she wouldn’t and she did!
  • JT, age 19, will receive an AAUW-funded Work Right scholarship to take his upcoming GED exam at SRJC.
  • Married couple Robert S and Dee S turn in over 200 hours of community service between the two of them, in the past 4 months at COTS emergency shelter.
  • “COTS members continued week three of the iWALK challenge today, addingon 12 more miles of heart healthy exercise!
  • One of our FC moms graduated from Solano County Drug Dependancy Court. CPS worker said she couldn’t do it and she did!
  • Jack (9) and Jim (7) came home from their first day of baseball practice with grass-stained uniforms and tales to tell!
  • Officer Mason from Petaluma PD wanted to let COTS staff know that we do amazing work here in the community.
  • While opening her bank account with $35, I saw “Julie” begin to calculate how much she would have at the end of 2 years if she put away $100 a month. A huge smile came over her while seeimg a “glimpse” of what financial freedom might look like…
  • A member who has been struggling with a past trauma shared some tools she has learned through one of the groups offered here at COTS.  With a light in her eyes and newfound confidence, she described a sense she now has of taking control again of her life and working with her pain rather than letting it rule her.  She truly looked like a new person, it was a joy to see.
  • A member downstairs got a job as a nanny, earning $50 an hour.  She is more excited about the opportunity to work with children and be productive than she is the paycheck – though that is welcome as well.
  • Ms. B has taken on the role of “harmony creator” in order to bring peace to her Family Shared Home. She’s doing great work!
  • Working for COTS is amazing!  A staffer credits COTS for the education and inspiration to start a successful new non-profit organization.
  • What does a road trip involve for two of our parents? Finding local NA meetings along the way, careful budgeting, and (hopefully) lots of fun!
  • Our Kitchen apprentice capably answered how many diners, where does food come from and how did she get her job posed by kids from Boys & Girls Club.
  • On Valentines Day teenagers from Harvest Christian School delivered a food drive and helped with Food Boxes.  We applauded their good work.
  • The two youngest members of COTS Emergency Shelter Program were accepted into the Treasure Island Job Corps program in San Francisco.
  • A Transitional Housing resident who is a Kitchen Apprentice passed his Serve Safe exam.
  • Another resident who has completed one year in Food Service at SSU competed for a supervisory position and got it as well as a major increase in salary!
  • Brad, a homeless Veteran, started learning to write this week, a step which took more courage than anything he faced in the service.

  • A handful of COTS participants become Resident Managers-they are role models of connection, hope, intention, & integrity in Shared Housing.
  • The RP Resident Managers had a lively and informative discussion about fostering communication in Shared Housing.
  • Our fathers group at the Shelter is providing support for fathers who want to improve their parenting skills every Thursday.
  • Another mom from The Family Center received her timecard from In Home Health Care which means she will start getting paid right away…she cried!
  • One of our moms in The Family Center received the ok from the court to have her 4 year old son visit her both Saturday and Sunday…she is elated!
  • COTS participants have enjoyed many visits from the Sonoma County Free Bookmobile – this week it added our family homes to their route!
  • Abby (12) loves books.  When the Bookmobile arrived at COTS, she decided to trade her books for new ones, honoring her mom’s request to tame the clutter in their room.
  • Jack (9) was chosen to represent his school at a School Board meeting.  After wowing members, he introduced them to all 9 members of his family who proudly attended.
  • Sue is about to be evicted.  After learning of COTS resources at the Kitchen, she stated “I’m so relieved, I didn’t know I had any options”
  • Food Service Apprentice, Dale D., passed his food safety exam and is now a Certified Professional Food Manager. Congratulations, Dale!
  • In one of COTS groups, residents shared knowledge about resources and found out how much they could help each other!
  • Work Right is busy this week offering a 5-day intensive Job Smart workshop and ten COTS residents are ready to launch a more hopeful job search
  • A Family Center mom got permanent housing and is moving in a week!
  • A Family Center parent who got a promotion has been strutting the halls in his new work clothes feeling very proud!
  • Four single moms now live together in one of our transitional homes, in supportive relationships they began at a domestic violence shelter.
  • A room of your own: $200.Sheets that haven’t been used before: $20.00.A shared, home cooked meal with other moms who understand your story..,priceless.
  • The moms from one of our Family Shared Houses pulled together to make the house spotlessly clean for an upcoming mayoral visit!
  • “Random Acts of Kindness” club members from Rancho Cotate High School attended our Vida Nueva tour and now want to volunteer as tutors!
  • E.C.starts a new internship mentoring at-risk youths and is one semester away from her Certificate in Administration of Justice at the SRJC.
  • At the Family Center House Meeting this week, we organized a Community Dinner for Sunday night. We are having Tacos and Lemon Meringue pie!
  • After two years of homelessness following a divorce and loss of his business, Robert signed a lease on a new apartment and a new life!
  • 4 single moms co-created an excellent system for pooling money to purchase cleaning supplies to maintain a happy, healthy home.
  • When getting her food box Sally said “We never had to ask for help before. My husband was laid off after years of working. The food boxes have saved us. You are a blessing!”
  • Coming from a gentleman I saw today, as we discussed his potential benefits:”I was mad and scared.  My whole world fell apart.  I lost everything. Today I have hope.”
  • Polly and Tannaz, the AmeriCorps members Nurse Annie supervises, gave a presentation at the Good Morning group on hygiene and virus’s on Friday. They were impressed with COTS group and thought they had great comments and questions.
  • Bob, age 25  came to COTS inspired by his mother’s progress in transitional housing  - stopping the cycle of addiction that had been in the family for generations!
  • 8 of our program participants started classes this week. They are taking subjects ranging from math to psychology!
  • Climbing up and down the side of the bunk bed, Alexander exclaimed “I am home…”.  You can’t beat that!
  • A new mental health-referred resident received terrific support from the VN community when he revealed harassment he’s previously suffered.
  • After only  one year employed in Dining Services at SSU, Mary was promoted today to supervisor and her salary will increase from $22,000/yr to $37000/yr.
  • Folks from the second floor are getting jobs like crazy…Jamie has an interview @ K-Mart tomorrow.
  • One of our moms just quit smoking…she has been trying for months!
  • After many years on the street, Sam came to COTS to build a new life.  Helping at the Kitchen to secure a recommendation, he’s determined to find a job.
  • Another one of our residents got more hours & lead position that he’s been trying to get for months, he is a happy employee.
  • A grandmother from the Family Center recently had surgery on her spine; she could have become paralyzed, but instead is doing fine!
  • One of our Family Center residents just got a job with In Home Support Services…she cried, she is so excited!
  • D.D. passed his ServeSafe test yesterday as part of his Kitchen Apprenticeship goals.
  • 1½ year-old Abby joined our reading circle this week.  She lay on her tummy between two older kids and pointed at the pictures as they read.
  • Kala, graduate of COTS, called to say she was promoted to manager at her job and to thank all who helped her develop the skills!
  • R, a COTS resident volunteering at the Petaluma Kitchen exclaimed, “I really love being here.  Everyone is so nice.  I can’t wait for you to move to the Mary Isaak Center!”
  • Our request for furnishings for our new Veterans Housing has been met with a tremendous response from the community. We have received enough donations to turn those apartments into comfy homes for our vets.
  • Former Food Box recipient states “We’ve combined our resources.  We’re doing so well that we no longer need the food boxes.  We only want to use the help when we need it.”
  • Four of our newest families @ COTS opened saving’s accounts with Exchange bank this week.
  • Our families on the second floor of COTS are privileged to have Karyn (therapist) begin working with them as of next week!
  • This week, Jim turned 50 and moved into an apartment of his own celebrating sobriety, a new job and a new life, thanks to COTS.
  • A resident was blessed by the Winter Fairy at the holiday party and her wish came true – her sick child will soon be seen by a specialist!
  • Jake and Ted move into their own place this Sunday after years of being homeless. After 10 months of steady volunteer work, Joe’s volunteer job turns into a paying job.
  • Due to excellent progress, getting a stable job and staying clean and sober, Jess gets taken discharge off probation 1.5 years early
  • Two COTS member Robert and Bill receive Certificates of Appreciation for doing over 250 hours of community service.
  • The kids got a visit from Susan & Katie, a 2.5 year old Bichon Frise.  7 year old Jacob especially liked to cuddle and read with her.
  • Twelve COTS members received certificates for attending the 5-day JobSmart seminar this week.
  • Two families at The Family Center say that T-ball has brought their family together…next is soccer!
  • We finished The Four Agreements workshop last week at The Family Center and I hear folks in the hall say, “don’t forget # 3, don’t take things personally or, “stop making assumptions!”
  • Ben said to his case manager,  “Thank you so very, very much for your support and most of all for believing in me more than I have.”
  • Two of our Vida Nueva moms are launching an ambitious community gardening project to beautify the grounds and grow healthful things to eat!
  • Families across Transitional Family Houses came together for food, conversation, and community building at our first potluck event!
  • The small things can make such a difference!  One mom successfully smogged her “new to her” car, and is feeling such satisfaction.
  • FC kids participated in a COTS Lego-building contest. Each child won an award and got to choose a prize. What a great self-esteem booster!
  • This week, a 3 year veteran of our program successfully transitioned into permanent housing – his very own apartment with his teenage son!
  • One family of four with two teens, is now housed and out of a motel, just in time for finals and prom!
  • Janice’s response to our Food Box program survey – “This program really helps me and my boys! Thank you for all you guys do to help others!”
  • Mary accepted the volunteer position of Floor Manager at The Family Center…we are very lucky to have someone step-up and take this responsibility!
  • Tommy 16, from the Family Center, was accepted into a private school for boys…family is ecstatic!
  • Transition of meal service from Payran to COTS was smooth.  Served 137 lunches.  Residents and kitchen patrons dined peacefully together.
  • 3 families have successfully found permanent housing in the last 30 days. Congratulations!
  • Sue said she used tools learned at COTS to not react in a hard situation at her job, the first one she has been more than 6 months!
  • One of our staff members was able to give support to a participant once it was revealed that they share the same medical condition.
  • Joe completes his Treatment Accountability for a safer Community Program early and is even more motivated to be an all around better person
  • Jesse moved from the shelter  into a clean and sober house this week, paid for by the first job she has had in a year!
  • Jack and Jill from The Family Center, are taking ceraCOTSs thanks to two wonderful COTS volunteers who made it possible for them to take the class…their artwork is beautiful!
  • Larry, from The Family Center, got a full-time job @ Grocery Outlet…he now qualifies for permanent housing!
  • A Casa student recently made and sold tamales, then used the proceeds to buy snacks for the kids at the Family Center. Way cool!
  • Our children’s summer lunch program will feature no less than five different volunteers bringing creative activities to do after each meal
  • The Petaluma Kitchen is becoming greener!  We are contributing less to landfill by washing instead of disposing of plates and flatware.
  • In an atmosphere of safety and support, a healthy 8lb 8 oz baby girl was born. Her mother’s good instincts were present all along the way.
  • Our first Saturday at the new Petaluma Kitchen went smoothly – community volunteers and clients packed and delivered over 200 food boxes!
  • Mathew received his G.E.D.! He is a transitional housing member who said, “I don’t have to lie about my education anymore”.
  • Will, a single adult in transitional housing, got his Class A passenger endorsement and got hired by MV Transport to bus veterans to services in CA and Oregon.
  • After completing an English class at the SRJC, Louis proudly shared some of his work with staff.  We all agree he did an amazing job!
  • One of our most frequent visitors to our reading program, Gia earned a reading medal for her successes in 1st grade.
  • Jan sent her final payment in to a creditor, becoming debt free after years of struggling financially!
  • Two of our families were overwhelmed with gratitude after learning we could help them avoid eviction with our Homeless Prevention resources
  • COTS clients demonstrated how kind and patient they are by welcoming their new case manager on her first busy day.
  • Kate gets her first job after 9 years of not working.
  • JP youngest adult member earns his GED and has stared his vocational training to become a Medical Assistant
  • Rich, Debbie, Robert and Keith each receive awards for over 250 hours of community service
  • Stan finishes his AA degree this week at Santa Rosa Junior College in Alcohol & Drug Counseling
  • After many months…Sam was approved for Social Security.Now sustainable housing and access to better healthcare “is at the top of my list.”
  • Bill ran into a former resident who is working 7 days a week and has a place of his own.
  • Residents of COTS and Staff Contributed $445 dollars for Japan Earthquake Relief.
  • One of our Family Center moms recently had a job interview and another has one scheduled. Both prospects look very promising. Yeah moms!
  • Gia (7) and Annie(5) received scholarships to attend ballet and art classes through the Petaluma Baptist Church this week.
  • This week our Vida Nueva children learned from volunteers how to create their own mandalas, and how to make origami boats and bunny rabbits
  • These literacy advocates will help the Family Center residents study to take their GED test which will enable them to help their children with homework.
  • The outcome of our literacy training last Sat, was four dedicated volunteers who have generously offered to work with four Family Center residents.
  • On June 21, we will celebrate the opening of the Petaluma Kitchen at the Mary Isaak Center.  At 4pm, our party starts with honoring our many volunteers.
  • Acknowledging his past, Charles looks to the future with optimism, “People here at COTS tend to lift you up….and not put you down.”
  • Our summer lunch and activities program started at Vida Nueva with laughing children going on a nature walk with full bellies!
  • Vida Nueva children ate vegetables happily  after cooking them into muffins  with a Family Connection volunteer.

  • This week, one of our mom’s had much a needed surgery to improve her health and is recuperating well, supported by her teenage daughter.
  • In fiscal year 10-11, our amazing Food Box volunteers made & delivered boxes with 798,635 lbs of food to folks in Southern Sonoma County!
  • After a fire drill last week one of the children remained “startled” from the loud alarm for a couple of days. He would not let go of mom’s leg. Using our trauma healing tools we were able to help him calm down and get back to normal again.

  • 13 separate home-share participants have completed home-shares through COTS Home-Sharing Program within the past ten days!
  • A single Mom who has only been with us since 12/10, just landed her first full time position in her new career! She starts in 2 weeks!
  • A home-sharing success! Rod is excited to give back by providing support for a person in need in exchange for affordable rent.
  • SSI pending, Vaughn is able to move into Singles Transitional Housing just in time for his much needed and previously delayed surgery.
  • Our recovery group had a deep, insightful and lively discussion about monitoring the effects of caffeine, sugar and nicotine as well as employing careful med-management routines in order to maintain health and well-being!
  • Going back to school at fifty, Bob is doing fantastic! He aced his first test and turned in his first paper a MONTH early!
  • 4 emergency shelter members helped a COTS staff member move in Petaluma. They completed the move in record time, and earned some cash too!

  • One of our groups talked about boredom as a relapse trigger. We found all are too busy with school, work, hobbies, etc. to be bored!

  • When Jackie and her young son arrived from a domestic violence situation, our families surrounded her with love and support. Jackie could not stop crying from gratitude.
  • After a decade of wanting to take the test, Jason is ready, willing, and able to take his GED this week!
  • Kids created a miniature golf course this week. They each added an obstacle, took turns playing and were great at problem-solving.
  • Joe, community living beyond “COTS’ umbrella,” has sought advice from COTS’ Disability Benefits Advocate. “Thank you, I didn’t know where else to turn to.”
  • COTS member Angel did not speak, only shed tears of happiness after receiving a certificate for reaching 500 hours of community service.
  • A friend lost his job and now eats at the Petaluma Kitchen so that he can use his money to pay rent; he is thankful for the free meals.
  • 3 young adults Luke, Diane and Jan have been accepted to Job Corps and are pending entry dates to start their vocational training programs.

  • After numerous struggles in life, Vicky knew she wanted to be a paramedic. On Monday she started Job Corps to become a medical assistant.

  • No longer physically able Sam felt ashamed, unable to support himself at 60 yrs old…an extra bounce in his step today, he’s SSDI approved!
  • Facilitating a healing drum circle has brought a great deal of joy and peace into the life of Sally, one of our wonderful residents.
  • One of our support groups was HUGE this week — 21 people! The extensive wisdom and insight of the group left the facilitators speechless!
  • Faith-based organizations on the move for COTS!  St. James did a recent gift drive and raised $10,000 for COTS!
  • Wells Fargo gives employees work-time to volunteer. Several  chose COTS, starting at 1x/ month, but some have already increased their hours.
  • COTS children had a blast trick or treating at “Cavity Cove” on D Street in their beautiful and scary costumes.
  • Last Saturday every Food Box Program route was delivered! Over 260 homes received pears, potatoes, cabbage, carrots, kiwi and celery, eggs and staples!

  • Jenny (11) has had such success with her tutor Stacey she asked to set up a second weekly appointment: I see high marks in her future!
  • Our recovery group had 25 people this week! Positivity, inquisitiveness, group wisdom and support abounds!
  • The Family Center party was wonderful; Mr Pope orchestrating Holiday Carols; Santa came with presents and Debbie organized yummy finger food!!
  • Children made “menus” this week to use while playing “restaurant”, their new favorite game. Yeah early literacy!
  • A family who recently moved out got a collage of personal photos, taken during their stay at COTS. Mom was teary-eyed, and thankful!
  • Art abounds at COTS! Residents have contributed drawings, happy notes, and stickers to a holiday mural on the 2nd floor.
  • Ron appreciates being given an opportunity to participate in COTS’ 30 Day Challenge Program. “I can now recover my life one step at a time.”
  • Following years of hard street living, Aureliano, entered shelter unable to conceive a life beyond his next meal. Warm, fed and safe, he is now imagining a home of his own.
  • Rohnert Park Rotary adopted 3 whole households in our shared housing program for the holiday Adopt a Family program and are buying every single person gifts.
